Scholarship is time consuming and rarely leaves room to present all interesting insights. Yet, these many little insights litter my notebooks, computer, and cognitive dashboard. As a supplement to my scholarship, I am opening this space with the aim of enlivening our perceptions of the plain people—Amish, Mennonites, and others—through timely, quick insights. I pull from my experience in the highly irregular role combination of both academic and plain adherent.
“As Well As” will cover these areas and more:
“As Well As” is what we say when we’re adding something, an afterthought joining a forethought. The phrase suggests that the core idea could use a bit more ornamentation, a low priority accent. But our intrigue with “as well as” is that the bold, front-ended idea is somehow insufficient. This captures my approach to scholarship and life. While I am interested in primary narratives, what intrigues me more is what’s beyond, the inconspicuous that most enriches our understanding.
The subtitle—”Addendums that Redefine”—stresses that the additions are not excess afterthoughts but transformative for the main idea. My goal is to move beyond what exists—be it conventional, worn narratives or widely-accessed new content—to discoveries that probe from the depths, margins, and hypotheticals of our thinking. This subtitle signals a commitment to deeper inquiry, questioning assumptions, and carefully sewing new seeds.
My goal is to keep posts occasional and concise, recognizing we live in an age of information overload. I’ll post when I have something relevant or interesting, something I hope is worth the time.
